Postpartum care after delivery

For a new mother, postpartum care after delivery of the baby is important. Period after delivery is called postpartum. This period will last for 40 to 48 days. During this period every new mom will go through lot of physical and emotional changes. It is important to take care of mother health during this period to recover completely and get back to pre-pregnant stage.

During this phase new mothers will learn how to take care of their newborn. Therefore, it will be difficult for them to manage themselves and baby. There will lack of sleep during and after this period. Sometimes these might lead to depression. So it is necessary to take care of physical and mental health to reconstruct yourself.

Whether it is normal delivery or cesarean,taking care of health for first 6 weeks is important. So how to take care of new mom’ health. I was so lucky that I had lot of support and advice from my family for  postpartum care after delivery . I was able to recover soon and take care of my baby. Here I like to share few tips which helped me rebuild my health and made me normal after my delivery.

Healthy food

  • Having nutritious food helps to recover your health, not to gain weight and also helps in feeding baby.
  • Have healthy diet which helps in lactation.
  • Do not eat spicy food. It is difficult to recover when you eat spicy food. It is better to avoid it totally
  • Eat food rich in protein.
  • Eating green vegetable and fruits are good for health and lactation.
  • Avoid outside and junk food. Strictly have home made food at least for 48 days after delivery.

Weight Gain

Some mothers are scared of weight gain during this period. This is the natural change occurs in body. Breastfeeding your baby makes you lose weight automatically. Sometimes due to lack of sleep or stress you would be gaining weight. Following healthy diet along with exercise in the later period will help to reduce weight.

Aggressive exercise or diet will lead to problems. Slow and steady workout and healthy diet will help in reducing weight. There are many diet plans available to follow. Start your exercise and weight loss diet after you completely recovered and normal.

After delivery almost every one will get belly fat. Wrap a cloth around your belly area tightly ( not too tight) for 2 to 3 hours every day. This will help to remove air from stomach. You can avoid belly fat by doing this regularly for 40 days.

My doctor suggested this me to reduce tummy:

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent.
  • Place your hand on your tummy
  • Breathe in and then breathe out slowly. This will tighten your tummy muscles so that your tummy is drawn in and flatten your back against the bed.
  • Try to hold the muscles tight for a count of 10.
  • Relax and repeat this 10 to 15 times
  • Do this as many times as possible in a day.

Rest

It is difficult to take rest as you will be feeding your baby every 2 hours. Also, you need to diapering, cleaning etc. Try to get help from your family to take care of your baby. They can help in bathing, diaper change for baby. Get help in preparing healthy food for you. This way you can take rest and have healthy food. Rest is more important during this period. Take enough rest and stay relaxed.

Sleep

It is not possible to get continuous 8 hours sleep for few months after delivery. You will be feeding baby often. Sleep whenever your baby sleeps. It will be difficult to sleep whenever baby sleeps. But it is a better way to get enough sleep. Do not use mobile in your baby sleep time or when you are free. Try to sleep along with baby or take rest.

Getting help

To take rest is important during postpartum period. Get help from family or get paid helpers to do household work like cleaning home, washing clothes etc. Taking care of baby includes hygiene washing of baby clothes. It is difficult for mother to manage everything. Get help from others and free from your responsibilities for few weeks.

If you do not have family members or friends to help in taking care of baby, get separate helper for taking care baby. If you already know there won’t be any family members available to take care for long days, book home care or helpers in advance. This will avoid tension after your baby arrival.

It is good to bathe newborn baby by experienced elders or baby care taker. As a new parent you will find little difficult to carry baby and bath. Your spouse can bath your baby till you recover completely.

Remove stress

As a new mom there will be difficulty in holding, breastfeeding and managing baby. This could be more stressful. Sometimes there will be mood swings or sadness. These are unavoidable. Reduce your stress by Relaxing massage from spa will help to reduce stress. If you are not able to go spa you can get masssage from home.

  • Listening music will help to relax your mind.
  • Going for outside walk regularly for few minutes.
  • Having bath in warm water will remove body pain and relax the body.
  • Doing meditation will calm your mind.
  • Avoid using mobile and watching TV.
  • Create custom card for baby announcement with Mixbook.

Conclusion

Every new mother must take care of their health after delivery and get completely recovered. It is good to get advice from family elders and follow your traditional methods. Traditional methods will be well suited for your body and will be easy to follow. Some doctors provide supplementary tablets to improve health. My doctor advised to take multivitamin and iron tablets for 6 months after delivery. It helped me to regain my strength. Get suggestions and advice from your doctor to improve your health.
