All the baby bottles are made from food-grade plastic, that’s why they are safe for use. Here the importance of boiling baby bottles is described below.

Dangers Of Unclean Baby Bottles

Boiling baby bottles before and after feeding your baby are very much important.  If you don’t sterilize the baby bottle before feeding then airborne viruses and fungus can go inside your baby while he or she sucks the bottle head.

When you feed a baby from a bottle that has not been sterilized they are at the risk of gastroenteritis. It is an infection in the intestines that might cause diarrhoea, cramping, and vomiting. If your baby has been exposed to the virus, it can be very dangerous and even fatal for infants.

Importance of Boiling Baby Bottles

An easy solution to avoid this tragedy all together is to sanitize your baby’s bottles and to decrease their risk of becoming infected in the first place with a baby bottle cleaner.

In addition to this, it is important to sterilize the bottle after feeding unless the saliva remains on the bottle will attract lots of viruses and disease on it. It’s good not to use a bottle for more than two weeks.

Boiling Baby Bottles Is Essential

Like water bottles and other liquid containers that seal off the ability to vent, a baby bottle can easily grow bacteria that are harmful enough to grow certain types of illness. And one of the most common illness that your baby might suffer is food poisoning.

In addition to this if you prepare your baby’s formula in a dirty kitchen or with hands that are dirty then the chances of your baby catching food-borne illness become significantly high. Make sure you don’t keep your baby’s formula out for a long time, if you do this then you might increase the chance of bacteria growing inside your baby’s bottle.

However, if you clean the baby’s bottle with some little soap or water then chances are there still might be some bacteria left. You can also opt for a baby bottle cleaner.

How To Boil Baby Bottles

There are various ways of using which you can sterilize your baby’s feeding bottle. Glass or plastic baby can hold expressed breast milk, formula, fruit juice or water. Here are some tips:

  • Bottles make it convenient for you to feed your baby on the go and allow your care giver or your partner to share the feeding duties. But before you offer a new bottle to your baby to feed or you think that one needs a deep cleaning then you must boil the nipples in order to ensure that you don’t allow germs orany harmful chemicals to enter your child’s system.
  • One of the most common ways is boiling it in hot water. Most of the germs and viruses die when youboil it in hot water. In order to sterilize a baby feeding bottle, you willrequire a pot, water and fire to heat the pan.
  • It’s good not to use the pot for other uses, like cooking and etc. heat the water and keep the bottles in the boiling water for five minutes to keep them free from germs andviruses.
  • After sterilizing check whether there is any damage to the nipple of the bottle.  Now put the bottles aside upside down and use them as soon as possible.
  • Speaking elaborately, wash the nipples of the used baby bottles with a dish washing soap and warm water before you boil the old and the new nipples in the same pot.
  • Sometimes you might notice a build up of milk or formula cake inside the nipples, do not clean the by your fingers instead use a special bottle brush found at the grocery which can be used to scrub the cake or build up milk away.
  • Now place the bottle nipples in a pot and some water in order to cover them completely. Make you pour enough water that the nipples might remain submerged through the entire process of boiling so that they will get sterilized both from inside and outside as well.
  • Now take the pot and make it sit on the stove on high heat to make the water boil. Let the baby nipples and the bottles sit the boiling water for minimum five minutes in order to ensure that you have sterilized them properly.
  • Remove the nipples with the help of a tong, do not try to do it with your hand as you might burn yourself.
  • Now put the baby bottles and the nipples on a clean towel and allow them to dry completely before you use them again. This will help you sure that the baby nipples do not contain any residual heat or still contains any drops of hot water which can make your baby burn.
  • Clean the baby bottles along with the nipples and rings and tools which you use to make the baby formula with hot water and dishwasher soap rather than sterilizing the bottle after each use. You can also run the bottles and nipples through a cycle in the dishwater.
  • Make sure you keep your baby and other children away from the kitchen when you are boiling the baby bottle in order to avoid accidents. However, if they are in the area then place the pot on a burner at the back of the stove and point the handle of the burner towards the back of the stove so that the child can’t grab it and pull the pot off the stove.

Time to Stop Sterilizing Baby Bottles

It’s good not to stop boiling bottles until your baby turns one year old. By this time, immunity system of the baby is fully grown and he can withstand the germs and viruses pretty well. However, there are some mothers who use to sterilize their baby’s feeding bottle until he or she stops using those.

But wait…

It is best to sterilize your baby’s bottle until they are a year old. As they are vulnerable to germs that cause diarrhea and vomiting. These germs develop very easily in the milk.

Bottles and teats have nooks and corners that milk can collect in. washing the baby bottles might not take away all the germs but the by sterilizing them you can ensure yourself that the baby’s bottle is free from harmful bacteria.

An Alternative To Baby Bottles

Once your baby is six months old and has started to take solid foods then you can encourage your baby to use a cup or sipper for her milk. Cups are a better option for your baby’s teeth than feeding bottles. They are easier to clean and don’t need to be sterilized.

Bacteria cannot breed easily in the solid food of your baby as compared to milk. So these dishes do not need to be sterilized. However, wash all your baby’s dishes in clean, hot and soapy water.

Make sure you wash your baby’s dishes separately and do not mix them up with other utensils in the kitchen. If you wash them in a dishwasher then check whether your baby’s things are dishwasher safe and wash them only on top shelf

Well, now you can understand that why boiling is necessary and why you shouldn’t stop boiling bottles before and after feeding your baby. Keep these things in mind in order to give your child a healthy and happy life.
